Sail me on down to Elizabeth City Take me there won’t you show me some pity Don’t know much about it but please come get me Heal my soul in Elizabeth City Sailboat on the river won’t you let me ride You can come pick me up on the changing tide First mate second mate whatever you like Just toss me the bottle every night Sail me on down to Elizabeth City Lord let’s hope that the women are pretty Don’t let me home with just any old bitty Here’s to better luck in Elizabeth City When we get there I know what to do Just drop me at the bar let me sing my blues Pick me on up about a quarter 'til 2 I’ll rise with the sun and sail on with you Sail me on down to Elizabeth City Let my charm be right and witty Hope some big man don’t get mad and hit me No more scars down in Elizabeth City No more whiskey no more wine Just pour me a beer and honey I’ll be fine Whiskey grows you tall like a Virginia pine But I don’t want no trouble down in Caroline If the city is mean then just let me go We can sail down the river or hit the road ‘Cause there ain’t no rest for a restless soul If the city is mean then we better just roll Sail me on down to Elizabeth City You better get ready if you’re gonna come with me It’s gonna get rough and it’s gonna get gritty If you wanna feel alive in Elizabeth City Sail me on down to Elizabeth City Take me there won’t you show me some pity Don’t know much about it but please come get me Heal my soul in Elizabeth City Heal my soul in Elizabeth City

Living on their terms Under their roof Sentenced to their judgements A slanted truth If that's the way they want it Then that's what they'll get Found herself a lover Who showed her respect She's getting married in a black dress She's calling the shots She ain't no damsel in distress She knows what she wants She's getting married in a black dress For the whole world to see She's getting married in a black dress She's getting married to me I've done a lot of traveling Read a lot of books Never seen nothing like her It only took one look But the service took me overseas I never felt more alone I fought battles for my country She fought her battles at home She's getting married in a black dress She's been waiting for this day Now we'll finally be together Living life our own way She's getting married in a black dress For the whole world to see She's getting married in a black dress She's getting married to me Her mother wouldn't let her visit Until she said I do The service wouldn't let me travel The order never came through So we figured out a new plan So she could be with me My brother stood in at our wedding Before she crossed the sea Now we're living on our own terms Under our own roof The black dress is in the closet In the dresser is our proof She's getting married in a black dress She's calling the shots She ain't no damsel in distress She knows what she wants She's getting married in a black dress For the whole world to see She's getting married in a black dress She's getting married to me

So many things I should've said to you But I knew in the end that it just wouldn't do All of the fights And cold goodnights So many things I should've said to you I'll carry on I can take it It's not my first rodeo I'll make it It hurts like hell but I'll take it all in stride It's just a thorn in my side So many things I could've said to you But I wasn't thinking with the words I used If I knew that You weren't coming back So many things I could've said to you I'll carry on I can take it It's not my first rodeo I'll make it It hurts like hell but I'll take it all in stride It's just a thorn in my side You know it's true The things you don't say or do They'll be haunting you for life So many things I want to say to you It won't be much longer now before I'm through I hope I raised you right I hope you know my pride for you So many things I want to say to you You'll carry on You can take it It's not your first rodeo You'll make it It'll hurt like hell but take it all in stride It's just a thorn in your side It's just a thorn in my side

The glowing neon sign says We're open So she sits down at the bar Where her shadow casts a lonely silhouette She thinks about relationships She has held together As tight as the ashes clinging to her cigarette Loneliness to her is happiness For happiness causes her distress So tonight she's where she really wants to be Smoke and misery Smoke and misery Are her favorite company Smoking in a corner all alone Staring at the touch screen on her phone Smoke and misery Are her favorite company She has on her favorite miniskirt Fishnet hoes and jacket She's turning lots of heads as she's dressed up to the nines But she's dressed up for no one And doesn't care who's looking She doesn't even noticed someone bought her glass of wine Loneliness to her is happiness For happiness causes her dietress So tonight she's with her favorite company Smoke and misery Smoke and misery Are her favorite company Smoking in a corner all alone Staring at the touch screen on her phone Smoke and misery Are her favorite company Smoke and misery Are her favorite company Smoking in a corner all alone Hoping for a ring on her phone Smoke and misery Are her favorite company

I don't sleep much anymore With you scratching at my window Your figure looming at the door A voice that reaches from the shadows I never thought I'd do what I did I live with it every day Whiskey always fresh upon my breath Still you won't go away I'm waiting for the sun to come I'm waiting for the sun to rise So I can rest my eyes 'Cause every night She comes calling I knew for sure that you had been with him I never had a single doubt Until I looked into your eyes Before the bullet took you out I'm waiting for the sun to come I'm waiting for the sun to rise So I can rest my eyes 'Cause every night She comes calling I wish I could Try as I might Forget you were ever there But still I feel those icy fingers Running though my hair I'm waiting for the sun to come I'm waiting for the sun to rise I'll be waiting 'til the day I die So I can rest my eyes 'Cause every night She comes calling

I was fifteen In Tennessee When I first heard you sing Stories of outlaws and bandits Sin and glory Tales of heartbreak's bitter sting Went to Nashville Bought my first guitar And I learned all of your songs But I soon realized The truth of music row It was time to move on I went down to the Lone Star State The place that you called home But Townes it just ain't Texas without you Without you Austin, Texas Is the sweetest of cities Where broken cowboys sling guitars It wasn't long before I started getting lost Felt so small among Texas stars I came down here to find myself In the place that you called home But Townes it just ain't Texas without you Without you It's New Year's Day And you're still remembered here Every night I play your songs They keep my hope alive And I'm not waiting 'round to die Your spirit keeps me strong I came down here to find myself In a place that you called home But Townes it just ain't Texas without you Townes it just ain't Texas without you Without you

about

Shane Cooley is a touring singer/songwriter hailing from Virginia. Before making his move to Austin, Texas, Shane met Richmond favorite Paulo Franco by both being finalists in the Mountain Stage NewSong Contest. The two artists began to co-write songs together on Paulo’s porch in Woodland Heights. The result is The Green Porch Sessions, a collection of co-writes and solo tunes. Cooley and Franco shine together as storytellers; “Married in a Black Dress” is the love story of Franco's parents, “She Comes Calling,” is a riveting tale of a man haunted by the ghost of the lover he murdered, and "It Just Ain't Texas Without You" depicts a Tennessee troubadour's pilgrimage to Austin in the footsteps of his idol, Townes Van Zandt. Ranging from sweet country ballads to full-on rock n’ roll, the 6-song EP is a musical and lyrical journey. The Green Porch Sessions was engineered by Richmonder Bob Rupe (Cracker, The Silos), and features Richmond musicians Dan Sessler, Johnny Hott and Harold Yager.
